The 2008 survey shows a continuing trend towards increased seeding of newer varieties. Some of the highlights of this year's survey are:
- Lillian and Harvest both increased their percentage of Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) and are now the first and second most-seeded varieties in that class.
- The days of one or two dominant CWRS seem over as new varieties come on stream at a faster pace. This year, the top five varieties make up almost 60 per cent of the class -- expect this trend to a group of five dominant varieties to continue.
- Strongfield has increased its dominance of Canada Western Amber Durum, and now accounts for 51.8 per cent of seeded durum acres, up more than 10 per cent from last year.
- For two-malting barley, Metcalfe remains the top variety while CDC Copeland continues to increase in seeded acres. For six-row malting barley, Tradition increased its acreage by about 50 per cent and now accounts for 33.1 per cent of seeded acres, second to Legacy at 45.6 per cent.
Now in its 11th year, the survey provides important information on variety adoption trends. The variety survey helps you make your seeding choices, helps the CWB develop plans to market your grain to your customers, and gives direction to plant breeders and seed growers.
Survey forms were mailed with permit book applications to all producers. About 8,900 producers responded to this year's survey. More than one third of responses were on-line -- the on-line survey could be completed within minutes.
Thank you to all farmers who participated.
