Marketing Program for Organic Grain

The CWB is continuing its organic marketing program in 2009-10 and will offer an organic basis-pooling contract. Under this program, organic producers will receive a cash price upon delivery negotiated at the time the contract is signed, and will also be eligible for a potential payment at the end of the crop year. This potential payment will be derived from any spreads between the upfront cash prices paid to organic producers and actual CWB returns.

Availability of contracts is limited, and will be driven by market conditions.

Farmers can express interest in the CWB marketing program by submitting their contact information to the "CWB Organic Cash Buying Farmer Registry". This can be done by faxing the form below to 204-983-3841, attention Organic Marketing, or e-mailing organicfarmerdirectory@cwb.ca. The CWB will contact those on the registry with offers for cash sales as opportunities arise.

Organic Fixed Spread Contract (OFSC)

The OFSC allows farmers to obtain an export licence or sell to domestic human consumption markets by making an up-front payment to the CWB. The payment is based on type of grain and market destination. It represents the benefits that organic farmers receive from the CWB, such as branding, product and variety development and advocacy on issues such as transportation, trade and biotechnology.

The OFSC is easy to use.

• The farmer phones the CWB (1-800-275-4292) with shipment information and proof of organic certification.
• The CWB informs the farmer of the applicable rate and invoices the farmer.
• The farmer pays immediately by wire transfer, credit card, or certified cheque.
• Once payment is received, the CWB issues the farmer or exporter an export licence.

Payment Options

Organic growers also continue to have the option to deliver to an organic elevator and receive the CWB conventional pool price plus a privately negotiated organic premium. The farmer signs a Series A delivery contract by October 31. Once committed, the farmer may not switch between the pool and other options. If the farmer commits to the conventional pricing, they would also be eligible for Producer Payment Options (such as the Early Payment Option) instead of the pool.
