Malting barley: Tips for growers

Reminder to Producers: Do Not Use Pre-harvest Glyphosate on Malting Barley

Given customer concerns, the Canadian Wheat Board and Canadian maltsters have zero tolerance for the use of pre-harvest pesticides like glyphosate on malting barley.

Major brewers worldwide do not want to buy grain that contains pesticide residues. Another concern is that glyphosate, applied under the wrong conditions, can severely reduce seeds' germination levels, which is extremely detrimental for malting barley. In fact it is important that only approved pesticides are applied to barley crops, that label rates are strictly followed and that pre-harvest intervals are adhered to.
