How to contract and deliver with CWB

The process is simple. You can sign up a pool or futures-first contract directly with CWB - through your local Farm Business Representative or by contacting CWB head office. Or you can sign a CWB pool contract with any of the participating grain handlers above. (Some companies will also offer CWB cash contracts.)

Either way, you are not locked into a delivery location or grain company on a pool contract. That's one unique advantage of a CWB pool contract, because it allows you to shop around for the best deal on freight, handling and trucking. Once you find what you like, you'll negotiate directly with the company - or companies - of your choice, and deliver your grain according to the arrangements you make.

Timing of your deliveries

All delivery arrangements will be made between you and the elevator. CWB will no longer issue delivery calls to farmers. CWB has negotiated capacity throughout the supply chain for the grain you contract with us, in the country and at port - which means your CWB contracts are treated no differently than the company's own contracts when it comes to delivery opportunity. CWB grain-handling partners have agreed to provide delivery opportunity throughout the year that best serves you and the needs of your international customers, and ensures orderly grain movement to ports.

All grain in the CWB Early Delivery Pool is guaranteed to be called in before January 31. All grain in the CWB Harvest Pool, Winter Pool, and Futures Choice Winter Pool will be called in before July 31 (June 30 for canola in the Harvest Pool).

How payment will work

As always, you'll be paid the CWB initial payment upon delivery, then receive adjustment and final payments from CWB (and/or the Pool Cashout value).

Advantage of early sign-up

Unlike the past, pool size may be limited - meaning there's a risk that you may not be able to participate in a CWB pool if you wait until fall to sign up. It's first come, first-served. Signing up early guarantees your access into the pool and puts you at virtually no risk. There's no reason to wait.

Cash contracts

Some grain-handling partners will also offer CWB cash contracts (Futures-first, Basis first and Deferred delivery), depending on market conditions on a given day.

Why grain companies want to handle CWB grain

  • Grain companies want to do business with CWB because they need volume, and CWB will bring in significant volume, in part because of farmer demand for CWB pool contracts. Handling companies make money by charging to handle CWB grain. Our logistics planning and execution can help minimize supply-chain costs. That's also attractive to some of our handling partners. As well, CWB can assume some risk and capacity commitments. And we can use our low-cost operating capital to help finance grain inventories. All of this makes partnership with CWB an attractive proposition for grain handlers.
  • CWB grain will be handled fairly and efficiently. As part of their agreements with CWB, grain companies commit to moving specific amounts of CWB grain to meet sales commitments. In addition, the grain companies are aware that farmers have the option of moving their CWB tonnes to another company, so it is in their best interests to do a good job of handling your CWB contract.
